Affliction

This is an old-fashioned term used to denote any difficult or unfavorable aspect(s) between two planets such as square, opposition, quincunx etc. A planet may also be considered afflicted when aspected by a neutral conjunction if either planet is Mars, Saturn, Uranus or Pluto. Astrologers today are more likely to use terms such as "inharmonious" or "challenging" to describe difficult aspects when discussing personal natal astrology, believing that a person with such aspects is more likely to grow and achieve things in life than those who only have harmonious aspects.
