Primarily, points formed where Great Circles intersect with the Ecliptic. Astrologically we call them: Ascendant (Horizon and Ecliptic in the east), Descendant (Horizon and Ecliptic in the west), Midheaven, also known as Medium Coeli or MC (Meridian and Ecliptic in the south), and Imum Coeli or IC (Meridian and Ecliptic in the north).
